Learning Expectations

Write structures or names, or identify functional groups for:

  • alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, carboxylate salts/ions, esters, amines, amides, benzenes, alkyl halides

  • di, tri, tetra

  • meth-, eth-, prop-, but-, pent-, hex-, hept-, oct-

  • cyclo, cis, trans

Deduce and explain relative solubilities in solvents (polar and non-polar)

Deduce and explain relative melting and boiling points

Draw and name the structural isomers or deduce the general formula (homologous series)

Write balanced structural and formula equations for combustion, addition, and elimination.

For a given polymer (addition, polyester or polyamide)

  • classify the polymer as addition or condensation

  • draw the monomer(s) from which it would form or draw a section of the polymer

Explain based on the function of groups:

  • identification of alkene group / unsaturated compound (iodine or bromine water)

  • oxidation of primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols

  • structure and reaction (with acidic solution) of primary, secondary and tertiary amines

  • identification of an aldehyde (Tollens' reagent, silver mirror test)

  • oxidation of an aldehyde

  • esterification/hydrolysis
